Shawn Corey Carter Bio
Shawn Corey Carter also known as Jay Z is a rapper, producer, and businessman born in Brooklyn, New York. He is currently considered one of the most successful hip hop artists of all time. He grew up in the Marcy Houses housing project in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. His neighborhood is considered one of the roughest neighborhoods in Brooklyn. He became interested in rapping when he was still a kid and took on the name Jay Z as a homage to his mentor Jaz-O and to the J and Z subway lines that stop at Marcy avenue in Brooklyn.
He became known by a wide audience after being featured on Big Daddy Kane’s album “Daddy’s Home.” Because he had not being singed by a major label, he began selling his CDs out of his car with his friend Damon Dash with whom he would later create Rock-A-Fella Records. He eventually reached a distribution deal with Def Jam records and released his second album “In my Lifetime Vol.1.” In 1998, he released Vol.2 Hard Knock Life” which became his biggest hit until then. He then released several other successful albums such as “The Blueprint,” “The Black Album,” and “Kingdom Come.” Although The Black Album was supposed to be his last album, he continued to release several other albums. In addition to his musical career, he has his own clothing line called Rockawear and co-owns a club called the 40/40 club in New York City and Atlanta.
